West Coast
Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast) provides health care services to one of the largest geographical areas in Aotearoa. Based on the West Coast of the South Island, covering an area from Karamea in the North to Haast in the South and services approximately 32,000 people.
The Te Nīkau, Grey Hospital & Health Centre Critical Care Unit (CCU) provides General and Cardiac Intensive care in a 4-bedded set-up. This excludes conditions where more complex input is required. In these cases, patients may be transferred to Christchurch Hospital.
The West Coast Region
The West Coast area located on the western side of the South Island in New Zealand can be described as a slender piece of heaven. It is situated between the Southern Alps, which lie to the east, and the rough, isolated beaches of the West Coast to the west.
The West Coast region is characterised by awe-inspiring and ancient panoramas, towering mountains covered in snow, massive glaciers, lush rainforests, grassy tussock lands, serene lakes, winding rivers, swampy wetlands, and beautiful beaches.

Te Tai o Poutini (West Coast) provides health care services to one of the largest geographical areas in Aotearoa. Based on the West Coast of the South Island, covering an area from Karamea in the North to Haast in the South and services approximately 32,000 people.
There are three major health care facilities in Greymouth, Westport, and Reefton, and five general practices across the region. They employ over 1,000 people, almost half of which are nurses.
They offer a wide range of services including a comprehensive mental health service – both inpatient and community – with acute, rehabilitation, child and family, and alcohol and drug services.
They pride themselves on being at the forefront of rural healthcare, nurses provide everyday care to communities and are first responders for any emergencies in the remote areas

Ideally you’ll need your own vehicle if you want to explore the beautiful West Coast, though the towns are all walkable and cycling friendly. Rental vehicles are also a good option.
