Whanganui

Whanganui Hospital has a six bed Critical Care Unit with remote mobile cardiac monitoring facilities. It is staffed by a dedicated and knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team which is patient-focused and promotes best practice for best outcomes.

The team provides the following types of health care, depending on patient needs:

  • intensive care (for patients needing to be on a ventilator or require constant observation)

  • coronary care (for patients with heart problems)

  • high-dependency medical care (for patients requiring non-invasive ventilation or high care needs)

  • surgical care (for major post-operative patients).

The CCU is co-located with the hospital’s Emergency Department, and Children’s and Maternity Wards to provide patients with a smooth transition between departments when necessary.

The unit has six beds and six telemetry units at its disposal, as well as a large family/whānau room with kitchen facilities and a television.

Some CCU nurses are also part of Whanganui Hospital’s flight team, who fly angiography patients to Wellington and other patients to specialist hospitals where required.
